I've always loved this photograph because of what it embodies, a promise of America that is spirited, youthful, sexy, driven, rebellious, hopeful, outrageous. Lensman Douglas Kirkland clicked this now iconic image of Ann Margaret in the Las Vegas desert in 1971. I was 4 and living in Southern California during its prime.
It might now seem like the winter of this nation, what with twisted priorities ike a government paying for a pop star's funeral when a legion of teachers are getting their pink slips.
But life can be good again. Hope springs eternal, right? Promise is in the pictures.
Happy Independence Day.
