From L8s Ang3les: Kirk McKoy and one of his perfect pics. |
Missing Julius Shulman who opted for the first night gala made me wish I’d not heeded Andy’s urging to pick one of the two opening nights and get some rest. Sure, I was happy to be lolled out on the sofa instead of among the mad throng of 1,200 invited guests crammed into the opening Wednesday of the Annenberg Space for Photography. That made for quite a crush in the 10,000 square-foot gallery, designed to mimic a camera, with an aperture in the ceiling and curved walls resembling 35 mm film canisters.

Wallis Annenberg in the flesh. |
I chose the next evening because my former colleagues at
W Magazine and Dior were hosting, and less than half that number made the night’s guest list, so there would be plenty of elbow room to mingle and, hopefully, actually see the featured works. Among the guests Thursday night were 9 of the 11 photographers on display in the inaugural exhibition, “L8s Ang3les”: Douglas Kirkland, Lauren Greenfield, Greg Gorman, Catherine Opie, Carolyne Cole (apparently, John Baldessari opted to do some lolling that night), as well as from another of my former pubs, the
Los Angeles Times, Genaro Molina, Lawrence K. Ho and Kirk McCoy. I was thrilled to see Kirk, whom I worked regularly with during my days at the paper. And neither Andy nor I can get his wonderful image of five boys jumping off a dock out of our minds.
As for Mr. Shulman? If the 98-year-old legend could roll into the party to celebrate this new shrine to photography, I should’ve gotten off the couch to celebrate him.
“L8s Ang3les” runs through June and admission is free. |
