Every Thanksgiving for the last several years, we've delved into the dark cave of the Echo nightclub and and joined Moj Mahdara and dozens of other pals to assemble hot meals for those less fortunate in our 'hood. It's a couple of hours of beautiful punk rock pandemonium, and not simply the soundtrack, as adults and kids tear cooked turkeys limb by limb, scoop yams and potatoes and ensure a napkin and plastic tableware are included in each box. Packages include toothbrushes, paste and clean clothes, too. Then another small army of volunteers, lined up outside in their cars, takes the meals out into the community. That's right. Just hands them off with a smile and well wishes.
It's an all-volunteer effort, nothing fancy, nothing formal. But utterly and totally about making life a teeny bit less painful for our fellow man and woman. During last year's Gobble Gobble, that added up to more than 1,500 individuals--up from 28 when it began a decade ago. Programs are popping up this go-round in San Francisco and Brooklyn, too, so check out the site if you're near there or want to begin your own.
There by the grace of life go any of us. So if you can or cannot make the two-hour meal-a-thon, at least donate a few bucks toward the effort. Simply click and give.
