Paper AK-47 by Martin Postler |
Couldn’t help but wonder what a guy like Al Capone, who appears to have relished all the trappings of gangster style, would’ve made of Martin Postler’s AK-47—handcrafted completely in paper. The craft gun was at the center of an exhibition this summer at London’s Craze Gallery, at which prominent street artists were invited to embellish the guns. Some of the statements were political, others purely aesthetic. And that mix of reactions is exactly what Martin was aiming at when he deconstructed this iconic example of product design from its dark use.
Andy was just giddy to finally receive our shipment of kits, which we posted tonight and will have in both stores as soon as he constructs a couple show models. We may be the first in the U.S. to have them, thanks to Andy’s charge to get them when the prototype first hit blogs.
To me, the paper weapon seems like a superlative companion to the Ballistic Rose. Tobias Wong introduced this bulletproof corsage four years ago, and it’s a classic. I love how it looks on a tuxedo. Capone could’ve definitely rocked it.

Not so the AK-47 earrings by Gogo for Toy Me which we import from Milan.
So all of this might suggest an obsession with guns. But it’s taken with a thick slice of wry. Just as I wrote tonight in the description on the A+R site for Martin's AK-47: If only the world’s wars could be solved with a bit of paper, craft glue and a pack of colored Sharpies.
If only.
