A Few of My Favorite Things
Horn Sweater by Thieves
If I were still writing to Dear Santa, I would definitely list these fave Fall/Winter items. Canadian brand Thieves designs forward-minded limited batches using sustainable production practices, as in the case of their Siberian top, this nubby sweater with horn shoulder detail handknitted from organic wool.

On that eco-note, Singgih Kartono's Magno desk accessories are also crafted with the planet in mind, from the new growth hardwood to enlisting woodworkers from villages in his native Indonesia. Instead of tacky souvenirs, Singgih applies their talents to making beautiful objects that also have a function. In addition to the set pictured here, we also carry the magnifying glass, compass and box cutter at A+R in Venice. For every tree used in production, a new one is planted.

Turnings by Alma Allen

Joshua Tree-based Alma Allen hand turns desert underwood and claro walnut into the most striking bowls and stools. My pal Roman Alonso gifted me one of his bowls a few years ago, and it's among my treasures. Roman's collective Commune Design collaborated with Heath Ceramics and Alma to showcase new work (through January 4), including these large pod-like stools which are breathtaking, and make my list.
Flat Work Tote by Clare Vivier

So many bags. So few that merit existence. The Flat Work Tote by Clare Vivier, on the other hand, might rank right up there with oxygen. At 14" by 12.5", this streamlined tote accommodates a laptop and folders. Double it over and it becomes a handsome clutch. I don't know Clare well, but I do run into her occasionally at the market and she has this lovely spirit. She makes everything locally so she can oversee quality and keep the carbon footprint of her manufacturing at a minimum. Can't decide whether I need a gold or silver. Maybe both?!

snapshot of the moment
Mathieu Lehanneur is inspired by interactions between nature and the human body. In fact, he says his favorite word is "human," in a "chemical and alchemical sense." This sculptural post was presumably a coat hanger. But those pretty well be some fantastic coats hanging off this piece.
