Treasure huters of vintage fashion: this is your weekend. Some two dozen vintage dealers are coming together in a downtown L.A. penthouse for "A Current Affair," a two-day event kicking off tonight with a party hosted by author-filmmaker-frock star Liz Goldwyn. This is the sophomore year for the holiday-timed pop-up vintage marketplace, as it's being billed, featuring some two dozen vendors—and a whole lot of pretty things. (Like the dotted tulle ruffle number above, a circa 1980s Arnold Scassi from Sielian's Vintage Apparel.)
To wit, tonight's cocktail preview with deejay Nguzunguzu also includes a book signing of Liz's new paperback edition of Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens. This is in advance of the December 21 launch of the HarperCollins book. I'm eager to see how it translates to paperback, given the hardback version is an absolute visual feast and a must in the library of any enthusiast of vintage, costume design, Americana, dance, feminism and, of course, burlesque.
The main attraction, of course, is the clothes, jewelry, accessories and books that will be for sale—and no doubt flying out the door—through Saturday evening. (A full list of vendors is below.) The event is the brainchild of Joey Grana of Scout and private vintage dealer Richard Wainwright (whom Kelly Wearstler recently namedropped as a favorite in a Vanity Fair interview. The bar will be plenty stocked with event pals PAMA pomegranate liqueur, IZZE sparkling juice and Smartwater.
A Current Affair is at the Cooper Design Space, 860 S. Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, 90014.Opening preview party is tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. Show runs through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10.
