Unless you've been under a rock today, you know it's the 30th anniversary of the day John Lennon was murdered.
He's automatically in my thoughts on this day every year, as he is on his birthday October 9, such a mad fan of the man and his music I've been since a very young age. (I used to record "Breakfast with the Beatles" on my cassette player so I could listen to the commentary and songs all week. I was 7. I planned on becoming a rock critic then, so even at that young age considered it part of my education.)
John Lennon, of course, was an individual who took great risks with self expression, in every aspect of his life and, let's face it, that is in large part what shaped the punk kid into an visionary icon, what informed his natural responses to the world inside and out into a legacy that continues to inspire and astonish.
Style is about substance. And this cat had an endless supply of both.
