Thinking of You, Daddy Oh…

My sister Blanca and I lost our dad, David Apodaca, in 1991. But he is still with us.

In my case, he’s with me every time…

I speak to an audience—my dad was an accomplished member of Toastmasters International and even took me to a few meetings when I was still in elementary school. I rose up to the challenge each time, and my knack for speaking without much time to prep is because of these learn-by-fire moments…

Every time I head out on a trip with my husband and daughter, which is probably as frequently now as it was when we were kids: my dad loved to travel and made sure when we were growing up that we made plenty of road trips throughout the western region and south of the border, as well as boarding planes to far-off locales. I learned to be adventurous with new circumstances, strange beds, stranger food and new people as a result of these invaluable experiences…

Each day when I read the news. He loved to read, and he loved to open the newspaper as well as listen to the news on the radio. He was an engineer, not a journalist. But I owe a career getting my fingers smudged with ink because of this…

Whenever I throw a party: he loved to entertain and made sure we did so throughout the year. Even my desire to throw a major Apodaca family reunion in the future is because of him. He was the one who pulled the Apodacas together every year, and worked diligently on compiling our family history before it was lost…

I am proud, in fact, to call myself an Apodaca and keep the name because of my dad.

Dear Rose, it has been such a long time since I have seen or heard from you, but today I ran across Blanca’s post about a tribute you wrote about your dear dad. It brought back so many memories of our childhood together and the fun times I had with your family, Your dad was a sweet and brilliant man, it was a pleasure to know him growing up and I know that being around the Apodaca family as a young teen , introduced me to your families artistic side, it was always an adventure being around your family. Happy Fathers day to your Daddy!

    Hello Susie,
So lovely of you to write! It has, indeed, been ages. Thank you for the kind note. I, too, have so many memories of you and your wonderful family. We had so many fun times, and I still cannot hear a few oldie cruising classics without thinking of your parents. Hope you’re all well. -R
