NY Fashion Week: Calvin Klein’s Panty Raid

Yes, folks, it appears even underwear deserves a party, and a birthday party at that. But these here skivvies that deserve a red carpet, an A-list guest list, Brent Bolthouse himself at the turntables, and a packed house of fashion press and hot models are just not any ol’ cotton briefs. These are Calvin Klein underwear, and they got just such a tribute—a 25th anniversary to be exact–at company HQ on 39th Street.
Of course, hosts were current Calvin Klein underwear stars Hilary Swank and Dijmon Hounsou. And, of course, there were plenty of reminders of while we were all there, including a massive Plexi box in the center of the room containing a half dozen live models in assorted poses and a couple of screens flashing with the iconic ad images shot over the years by Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, Steven Klein, etal. Neither Kate Moss nor Mark Wahlberg—two of the campaign’s most memorable subjects—were there. And, frankly, it was nearly impossible to make out whether promised guests Mary J. Blige, Clive Owen, Amanda Peet, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Bosworth and a couple other dozen stars were there in the darkly lit, cavernous hall. But Riley Keough, Brittany Snow and Terry Richardson were spotted. (Make-up artist Kathy Jeung, who I dragged over there with me following the L.A.M.B. show, also observed that the ratio of male guests to female was kind of glaring.)
Francisco Costa snuck down from his studio for a tiny break from designing the women’s collection, which is a very quick week away from showing. “It’s going to be very Calvin,” he tried to convey above the thumping din. He was more interested in chatting about non-work stuff, and who could blame him? “I feel as tired as I look,” he insisted, although he can’t help but look even more boyish than usual in those braces he got eight months ago. Just minutes after coming down, and without so much as a glass of Veuve, the poor dear dragged himself back up to work.
