Alva Turns 50

On or off a skateboard, Tony Alva’s maverick style is the stuff of legend. The rock star of the Z-Boy crew that put the seaside L.A. ‘hood of Dogtown on the pop cultural map three decades ago, the still-iconoclastic, still-stylin’-as-ever Alva turned 50 on Sunday. Ya, FIVE-OH. Also celebrating the very same birthdate (but 38) was his long-time paramour Katy Rodriguez, the rising star designer and half of the power at vintage temple Resurrection. Her biz partner Mark Haddawy hosted the fete at his jaw-dropping John Lautner address, complete with a pool-side, 180-degree view that includes the Universal circus and Griffith Park.

Mark, who also restores Modernist homes to their original splendor, ripped off the second story, which had been thoughtlessly erected by the previous owners. He’s taken incredible care to appoint the home with just the right furnishings and sculpture.
It was the salt-water pool that had everyone’s notice, though, considering the 102 temps scorching the city. Even those of us reclining around it were kept duly wet courtesy of Jeremy Scott’s ceaseless dives. With one torpedo plunge, we cringed at the possibility the Speedo-clad designer would crack his noggin’. He does, after all, have a presentation in Paris later this month. As for Katy, she’s showcasing her namesake collection in New York on Sept. 10. Arianne Phillips, the uber stylist and a party guest, is lending her guidance. “She’s had amazing growth with this collection,” Ari shared. “It’s a whole new direction for Katy, but still as chic as ever.”
